What is alt text?
Alt text is a text alternative that conveys the purpose or information of an image. It is commonly stored in the HTML alt attribute and read by assistive technology.
Does alt text affect SEO?
Alt text helps search engines understand images in context. It does not guarantee rankings; describe the actual image naturally and avoid keyword stuffing.
Do decorative images need alt text?
Purely decorative images should normally use an empty alt attribute, alt="". Do not simply omit the attribute. If an image is a link or conveys information, describe its function or meaning instead.
Can I generate alt text in bulk?
Generate one image at a time. Bulk processing is not supported.
How do I add alt text in Shopify?
Open the image’s details in Shopify, edit its alt text field and save. For product images, start from the product’s media section. This site does not connect to Shopify or update your store automatically.
What can Alt Text Generator do?

What does alt text mean?
Alt text (alternative text) is a short written description attached to an image. Screen readers read it aloud for people who are blind or have low vision, browsers show it if the image fails to load, and search engines use it to understand what the image shows. Good alt text describes the image's content and purpose in one concise sentence.
How do I write alt text in HTML?
Add the alt attribute to the <img> tag: <img src="dog.jpg" alt="Golden retriever catching a frisbee on a beach">. For purely decorative images, use an empty value — <img src="divider.png" alt=""> — so screen readers skip it. Don't leave the attribute out; some screen readers will read the file name instead.
How do I add alt text on X (Twitter)?
Attach your image to a post, then select "Add description" on the web or tap "+ALT" in the iOS or Android app. Type your description (up to 1,000 characters per image), save, and post. Each image in a post can have its own description. Alt text can't currently be added to videos.
How do I add alt text in Wix?
In the Wix Editor, select the image, click the Settings icon and enter a description under "What's in the image?" — that text becomes the image's alt text. Wix recommends keeping it to 125 characters or fewer. You can paste text from our generator straight into that field.
How long should alt text be?
There's no limit in HTML or WCAG, but about 125 characters or fewer is common guidance (Shopify, Wix and Meta all recommend it). Etsy Help recommends up to 250 characters. Platform fields add hard caps: Pinterest 500, Shopify 512, X 1,000. See our full alt text character limit table.
Is alt text a legal requirement?
In many cases, yes. In the US, courts and the Department of Justice have applied the ADA to websites, and WCAG — which requires text alternatives for meaningful images — is the usual benchmark. Public-sector sites face explicit rules. Adding accurate alt text is one of the simplest ways to lower your risk. This isn't legal advice.
