How the DoorDash mileage deduction is calculated
Multiply Jan–Jun business miles by 0.725 dollars per mile and Jul–Dec miles by 0.76 dollars per mile, then add the results. The annual IRS announcement supplies the first rate; Announcement 2026-11 supplies the July change.
Hypothetical example: 1,000 eligible miles in each half gives 725 + 760 = 1,485 dollars of mileage deduction. Your tax savings depend on your tax situation; this is not a savings estimate.
Which miles count for Dashers (and which don't)
Keep records of delivery trips, business travel to pickups, and travel between orders or business locations. Repositioning must have a documented business purpose; being logged into an app does not automatically make every mile deductible. Exclude personal detours.
Under IRS commuting rules, home-to-regular-workplace travel is generally personal. Do not automatically count the drive to your first order or the trip home after your last delivery. A qualifying home office, temporary work location, or other facts can change the analysis; ask a tax professional about complex situations.
Does DoorDash track your mileage?
DoorDash Help says qualifying car Dashers receive a mileage estimate email for tax season. Treat it as a cross-check, not a complete mileage log: an estimate does not establish the date, purpose, and distance of every deductible trip. Keep your own contemporaneous records.
What to put in your mileage log
Record the date, start and end locations, business purpose, and miles. Odometer readings can help support the distance. Separate commuting and personal travel, and total your miles for each rate period. Keep supporting records for parking and tolls.
Standard mileage vs actual expenses
The standard mileage method uses eligible miles and the applicable rate. The actual-expense method allocates eligible vehicle costs to business use. Do not add fuel, insurance, or depreciation again when those costs are already covered by the standard rate. IRS business-use-of-car guidance explains the methods and recordkeeping.
For an owned car, choosing standard mileage in its first year of business use preserves the option to switch methods later, subject to the rules. For a leased car, using standard mileage generally commits you to that method for the lease, including renewals.
Where to enter it: Schedule C
Self-employed delivery drivers generally report eligible car and truck expenses on Schedule C. Complete the vehicle information required by the current instructions and retain the log with your records. An employer reimbursement and a self-employed deduction are different; do not deduct an expense twice.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my DoorDash mileage deduction for 2026?
Multiply eligible Jan–Jun miles by 0.725 and Jul–Dec miles by 0.76, then add the dollar amounts. Use actual logged miles for each period.
Is the DoorDash mileage estimate enough for taxes?
Use the estimate as a cross-check. Keep records supporting the dates, destinations, business purposes, and miles claimed.
Can I deduct miles driving to my first DoorDash order?
Not automatically. Ordinary home-to-work commuting is personal; qualifying home-office and temporary-workplace situations can differ. Ask a tax professional about your circumstances.
What is the IRS mileage rate for DoorDash drivers in 2026?
Eligible business driving uses 72.5 cents per mile before July 1 and 76 cents per mile from July 1, 2026.
Do I need receipts if I use standard mileage?
Keep a mileage log and supporting records. You do not separately claim gasoline covered by the mileage rate; keep receipts for separately claimed eligible tolls and parking.
Does this work for Uber Eats and Instacart too?
Yes, the calculation uses eligible business miles, regardless of delivery platform. Apply the same business-use and commuting rules.
