How the Instacart mileage deduction is calculated

Multiply eligible Jan 1–Jun 30 miles by $0.725 and Jul 1–Dec 31 miles by $0.76, then add the two amounts. Eligible business tolls and parking are added separately, without multiplying them by either rate.

The IRS standard mileage rates list 72.5¢ for Jan–Jun 2026 (IR-2025-128) and 76¢ for Jul–Dec 2026 (IR-2026-29). The 2025 business rate was 70¢. See our IRS mileage rate 2026 guide. The result is a deduction estimate; it does not estimate tax savings.

Which Instacart miles you can deduct

Business driving generally includes store-to-customer deliveries, travel between stores in a multi-store batch, and driving from a completed delivery to the next store for work. Exclude personal detours. Walking while picking groceries does not count as vehicle mileage.

Home-to-first-store and last-delivery-to-home trips are often commuting and generally not deductible. A qualifying home office or temporary work location can affect treatment. Consult a tax professional for edge cases and follow IRS Publication 463. These are general tax principles, not an Instacart policy.

Does Instacart give you a mileage summary for taxes?

Check what any Instacart app mileage figure or summary actually covers before using it for taxes. Do not assume an order or engaged-mile figure includes every eligible trip. Compare it with your own dated log, including travel between stores or to the next business stop; exclude commuting and personal driving.

This is a record-checking recommendation, not a claim that Instacart provides a complete tax log or a statement of Instacart Help policy. Keep an independent Instacart mileage tracker or log and reconcile it with app records. See IRS Publication 463 recordkeeping guidance.

Instacart vs DoorDash vs Uber vs Amazon Flex

The same IRS standard business-mileage rules apply to eligible Instacart, DoorDash, Uber and Amazon Flex driving. Grocery delivery, food delivery, rideshare and package delivery do not get different rates just because the platform differs.

When working across platforms, count each business mile only once, even if several apps are active. See the DoorDash mileage calculator, main calculator and 2026 IRS rate guide.

Standard mileage vs actual expenses

Choose a permitted method for each vehicle: standard mileage uses eligible miles and the applicable rate; actual expenses allocate eligible vehicle costs to business use. Do not add gas, repairs, insurance or depreciation on top of standard mileage when the rate already covers them. Eligible business parking and tolls can be separate.

Method elections and switching restrictions matter, including first-year rules for owned cars and lease rules. Review IRS business-use-of-car guidance for your vehicle before choosing. This calculator does not compare which method gives you a larger deduction.

What a mileage log needs

Record the date, miles and business purpose of each trip, plus start and end locations. Odometer readings help support distance and annual business versus personal use. Keep receipts for separately claimed tolls and parking.

Download the CSV mileage log template. Use the main mileage reimbursement calculator to log multiple trips and their dates.

Where it goes: Schedule C

Self-employed drivers generally report eligible vehicle expenses on Schedule C under car and truck expenses. Follow the current vehicle-information instructions and retain your mileage log and supporting records. Do not claim the same expense twice.

FAQ

How do I calculate my Instacart mileage deduction for 2026?

Multiply eligible Jan–Jun miles by 0.725 and Jul–Dec miles by 0.76, then add the amounts. Add eligible business tolls and parking separately. Use dated records to split your miles.

What is the IRS mileage rate for Instacart shoppers in 2026?

The business rate is 72.5 cents per mile for Jan 1–Jun 30 and 76 cents per mile for Jul 1–Dec 31, 2026. Apply each rate only to eligible business miles driven in that period.

Does Instacart track my mileage for taxes?

Check the coverage of any app mileage summary against your own dated trip log. Do not assume order or engaged miles capture all eligible business driving. Keep independent records, exclude commuting and personal trips, and follow IRS recordkeeping requirements. This is not an official Instacart policy statement.

Can I deduct miles driving from home to the grocery store?

Home-to-first-store and last-delivery-to-home trips are often commuting and generally not deductible. A qualifying home office or temporary work location can affect treatment. Consult a tax professional for edge cases.

Can I deduct gas on top of the standard mileage rate?

No. The standard mileage rate covers gas and other vehicle operating costs. Eligible business tolls and parking may be claimed separately; keep supporting records.

Does this work if I also drive for DoorDash or Uber?

Yes. Enter eligible business miles for all platforms in the correct period. Reconcile your logs and count each business mile only once, even when multiple apps are active.
