How the Uber mileage deduction is calculated
Multiply eligible Jan 1–Jun 30 miles by $0.725 and Jul 1–Dec 31 miles by $0.76, then add the two amounts. Eligible business tolls and parking are added separately, without multiplying them by either rate.
The IRS standard mileage rates list 72.5¢ for Jan–Jun 2026 (IR-2025-128) and 76¢ for Jul–Dec 2026 (IR-2026-29). The 2025 business rate was 70¢. See our IRS mileage rate 2026 guide. The result is a deduction estimate; it does not estimate tax savings.
Which Uber miles you can deduct
Business driving can include miles while online waiting for requests, en route to a pickup, and on a passenger trip or delivery. Keep records of the business purpose; being online alone does not make personal driving deductible. Exclude personal detours.
Driving before your first trip or commuting home is not automatically deductible. Ordinary commuting is personal; a qualifying home office or temporary work location can affect the rules. Review IRS Publication 463 and consult a tax professional for complex cases.
Is the mileage in your Uber Tax Summary enough?
A platform mileage summary can be a useful cross-check against your own records, but it does not establish that every reported mile qualifies for a deduction or capture every business trip outside the platform.
Keep your own dated mileage log, reconcile it with the summary, and separate business, commuting and personal miles. If your summary only gives a yearly total, use your dated records to split miles at July 1.
Uber vs Uber Eats vs Lyft
The same federal business-mileage rules apply whether you drive passengers for Uber or Lyft or deliver with Uber Eats. Use this Uber Eats mileage calculator or Lyft mileage calculator with your eligible miles for each period. Platform names do not change the IRS rate.
When multi-apping, the same mile cannot be counted twice. Reconcile overlapping app records into one log. For delivery-specific guidance, see the DoorDash mileage calculator.
Standard mileage vs actual expenses
Choose a permitted method for each vehicle: standard mileage uses eligible miles and the applicable rate; actual expenses allocate eligible vehicle costs to business use. Do not add gas, repairs, insurance or depreciation on top of standard mileage when the rate already covers them. Eligible business parking and tolls can be separate.
Method elections and switching restrictions matter, including first-year rules for owned cars and lease rules. Review IRS business-use-of-car guidance for your vehicle before choosing. This calculator does not compare which method gives you a larger deduction.
What a mileage log needs
Record the date, miles and business purpose of each trip, plus start and end locations. Odometer readings help support distance and annual business versus personal use. Keep receipts for separately claimed tolls and parking.
Download the CSV mileage log template. Use the main mileage reimbursement calculator to log multiple trips and their dates.
Where it goes: Schedule C
Self-employed drivers generally report eligible vehicle expenses on Schedule C under car and truck expenses. Follow the current vehicle-information instructions and retain your mileage log and supporting records. Do not claim the same expense twice.
FAQ
How do I calculate my Uber mileage deduction for 2026?
Multiply eligible Jan–Jun miles by 0.725 and Jul–Dec miles by 0.76, then add the amounts. Add eligible business tolls and parking separately. Use dated records to split your miles.
What is the IRS mileage rate for Uber drivers in 2026?
The business rate is 72.5 cents per mile for Jan 1–Jun 30 and 76 cents per mile for Jul 1–Dec 31, 2026. The same rates apply to eligible Lyft and Uber Eats business miles.
Does Uber's tax summary include all deductible miles?
Not necessarily. Uber reports online miles including on-trip, en-route-to-pickup and online waiting miles. Keep your own log to support eligibility, record business travel outside Uber, and exclude personal or duplicate miles.
Can I deduct gas on top of mileage?
No. The standard mileage rate already covers gas and other vehicle operating costs. Eligible business tolls and parking may be claimed separately; keep supporting records.
Can I deduct miles driving to my first pickup?
Not automatically. Ordinary commuting is personal. Qualifying home-office or temporary-workplace circumstances can change the treatment; consult a tax professional for complex cases.
Does this work for Lyft and Uber Eats?
Yes. Enter eligible business miles for either platform in the correct period. When using multiple apps, count each business mile only once.
